O'Connell
Ryan O'Connell - Social Studies Teacher
roconnell@bcps.org
College AttendedTowson State University (BA) Brooklyn College (MA)

Bio: What a long, enjoyable trip it’s been. As I enter my 25th year of teaching, I have now spent more than half of my life as a teacher. I started at Catonsville Middle in 1999 after earning my BA in social science/ secondary education where I still hold the high jump record.  Some white boys can jump. . My wife’s career in the fashion industry took us to Florida where I was the 7th grade team leader and social studies department chair at Veterans Park Academy for the Arts. In 2010 my wife and I grew bored of southwest Florida and moved to Brooklyn, NY, where I finished my master's degree in International Affairs, was a stay-at-home Dad for my son’s first two years, volunteered at the Imani House, and taught at Empower Charter in Crown Heights. In 2016 we moved back to MD and I returned to Catonsville Middle and Catonsville High; where my early aughts students were now my colleagues. I have driven cross-country twice, backpacked through Europe and North Africa. My youthful spontaneity, while not gone, has maturely diminished (e.g. Disney vacations with simulated adventures not real ones).   As we’ll cover this year, in both psychology and world history, life is a journey.  Seconds, minutes, days, and months seem like an eternity.  Blink and the years will go by before you know what you missed.  Enjoy the the journey.
