What is the AP Program?

The Advanced Placement Program (AP) is a cooperative educational endeavor between secondary schools and colleges and universities.  It gives high school students exposure to college level material through involvement in an AP course administered by the College Board and taught by qualified and dedicated high school teachers.  The program gives the students an opportunity to show what they have learned by taking an AP exam designed by the Educational Testing Service for the College Board.  Colleges and Universities that participate in the AP Program are then able to grant credit, placement, or both to students who score well on the exam.

Who should register for an AP course?

The key to a successful AP experience depends on the student’s strong interest in the subject, intellectual curiosity, motivation and willingness to work hard. Because AP courses are intended to emulate a college level experience but vary widely, interested students should seek the advice of their guidance counselors, current teachers in the subject area, and the specific AP teachers.

What are the benefits to students?

Students who participate in the AP program not only learn a subject in depth but also develop analytical reasoning skills and disciplined study habits that can contribute to continued success at the college level. Those who score well on the AP exams are often awarded college credit or exempted from introductory courses by the colleges they attend. If enough AP credits are recognized, sophomore standing may be granted. When attending a university outside the U.S., students may also be eligible to receive the AP International Diploma for Overseas Study

How many AP courses should students take in a year?

If students are very well prepared and highly motivated, they are encouraged to register for several AP courses. If the prerequisite courses are met, students can take an AP course in any year of high school. Students need to assess what they consider to be a reasonable course load.

Should all students who take an AP course take the AP examination?

All students who take an AP course are encouraged to take the exam. The experience of taking not only the AP course but also the AP exam, which is the culmination of that experience, generally benefits the student. The fact that a student has attempted a difficult course and examination is of interest to college admission officials.
